Biography

Jonathan Steinberg is a Democratic State Representative for Connecticut's 136th Assembly District, which includes most of the town of Westport in Fairfield County. First elected in 2010, he served multiple terms, becoming the longest-serving holder of the seat, but announced in early 2026 that he would not seek a ninth term and plans to retire.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Graduated from Westport public schools . Earned a B.A. in Psychology from Yale University and an M.B.A. in Marketing with Honors from NYU's Stern School of Business. Certified to teach History/Social Studies in Connecticut public schools via the Alternate Route to Certification program.
  • Early Political Experience: Elected to Westport's Representative Town Meeting in 2003, serving seven years as Deputy Moderator and chairing committees on Health & Human Services, Information Technology, Library Museum & the Arts, and Communications. Appointed to town groups including the Town Plan Implementation Committee , Wastewater Management Committee , Celebrate Westport Committee, and Longshore 50th Anniversary Committee.
  • State Legislature Roles: House Chair of the Energy & Technology Committee; previously Co-Chair of the Public Health Committee. Serves on Public Health and Environment Committees. Member of Advanced Manufacturing, Tourism, Long Island Sound, and Intellectual Disabilities Caucuses; Co-Chair of the Bioscience Caucus.

Notable Achievements and Positions

  • Led passage of Connecticut's first statewide water plan, modernized recycling laws , restricted toxic PFAS chemicals in drinking water, improved school indoor air quality via HVAC upgrades, and advanced the Climate Mitigation Act for 100% clean electricity by 2040.
  • Endorsed by Connecticut League of Conservation Voters for environmental leadership, including clean energy, climate resilience, and power grid stabilization.
  • Championed repeal of religious exemption on school-age vaccinations as Public Health Committee Co-Chair.
