Biography
Jonah Garson is a Democratic member of the North Carolina Senate representing District 23 . He was appointed to the seat on April 10, 2026, succeeding Graig Meyer, who resigned to become executive director of the North Carolina Justice Center. Garson serves as First-Vice Chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party since 2023 and is an attorney focused on voter protection and civic engagement. Notable achievements include serving as Voter Protection Director for the 2019 9th Congressional District redo election, representing Chief Justice Cheri Beasley's 2020 campaign, and litigating against voter ID laws aimed at disenfranchising Black North Carolinians. He previously ran unsuccessfully in the 2022 Democratic primary for the North Carolina House District 56.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Attended Frank Porter Graham Elementary School, Culbreth Middle School, and Chapel Hill High School in Chapel Hill-Carrboro. Earned a degree in English from UNC Chapel Hill in 2009. Holds a law degree from Columbia University.
- Political Experience: Chair of the Orange County Democratic Party and member of the Chapel-Hill Carrboro NAACP executive committee. Assisted dozens of legislative candidates with fundraising, field organizing, and strategy over the past decade. Early jobs included working at Mediterranean Deli and teaching classical guitar locally. Appointed to NC Senate District 23 in April 2026 by Democratic officials from Caswell, Orange, and Person counties.
