Jon Bumstead is a Republican state senator representing Michigan's 32nd District, which includes all of Benzie, Mason, and Oceana counties, most of Muskegon County, and the western part of Manistee County. Born on July 30, 1957, in Fremont, Michigan, he resides in North Muskegon with his wife Cindi and has three children—Belinda, Ray, and Jona—along with four grandchildren. Bumstead owns Bumstead Construction, a home-building and remodeling business he started over 39 years ago. He is an avid sportsman, former president of Safari Club International’s Michigan chapter, a life member of the National Rifle Association, and a member of Michigan United Conservation Clubs and Right to Life of Michigan. Community involvement includes serving as a charter member of the Newaygo Jaycees, volunteer firefighter with Newaygo Area Fire and Rescue Command, and participation on local boards such as the Brooks Township Planning Commission and Newaygo County Building Review Board.

Education and Political Experience

Bumstead graduated from Newaygo High School and the Newaygo County Career Tech Educational Center Building Trades Program.

His political career began with election to the Michigan House of Representatives for the 100th District in 2010, where he served three terms until 2016, including as vice chair of the House Appropriations Committee. He then served in the Michigan Senate for the 34th District from 2018 to 2022, chairing the Appropriations Subcommittee on Natural Resources and Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. Reelected in 2022 to the newly drawn 32nd District, he currently serves as Minority Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee , with additional roles on Appropriations subcommittees for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Environment/Great Lakes/Energy, Labor/Economic Opportunity/MEDC, and Transportation. He also sits on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Senate Fiscal Agency Board of Governors.
