Biography

Johnathan Newman

Johnathan Newman is a Republican member of the Ohio House of Representatives representing the 80th District, which includes all of Miami County and southern Darke County.

Johnathan Newman was born on July 5, 1968. He is a Christian pastor and community leader who has dedicated much of his career to religious and pastoral work. Newman is the founding senior pastor of Koinos Church in Troy, Ohio, a position he has held since the late 1990s—serving in this role for over 26 years. Beyond his pastoral duties, he has worked as a certified marriage and family counselor with the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors.

Newman is known for his pro-life advocacy and has been a strong supporter of pregnancy resource centers, including Hope Rising in Dayton. In recognition of his work championing the protection of the unborn, he received the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Award from the Center for Christian Virtue in 2017.

He resides in Troy with his wife, Jeni, whom he has been married to for 27 years. They have three adult children together.

Education

Newman holds bachelor's degrees in theology and sociology from Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, and a master's degree in theology from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary.

Political Experience

Newman was elected in November 2024 to the Ohio House of Representatives, defeating Democrat Melissa VanDyke with 74.9% of the vote. He was sworn into office on January 6, 2025, and is serving his first term in the state legislature.

In his legislative role, Newman serves as Vice Chair of the House Agriculture Committee and is a member of the Community Revitalization, Education, and Transportation committees. He has participated in the passage of the state operating budget and supported legislation including the Agriculture Appreciation Act. In June 2025, he co-sponsored the Ohio Prenatal Equal Protection Act, which proposes granting full legal personhood to fertilized embryos.
