Biography
John Stevens is a Republican member of the Tennessee Senate representing the 24th district, which includes Benton, Carroll, Gibson, Henry, Houston, Obion, Stewart, and Weakley Counties in Northwest Tennessee. Born on October 18, 1973, he was first elected in 2012, defeating Democratic nominee Brad Thompson after winning the Republican primary, and has served continuously since assuming office on January 8, 2013. He is the first Republican to represent Obion and Weakley counties in the State Senate. Stevens resides in Huntingdon, Tennessee, with his wife, Elicia, and their two daughters, Lexie and Mary Kendall; the family attends First Baptist Church Huntingdon, where he teaches Sunday school and coaches his daughters' basketball teams.
Education and Political Experience
Stevens holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Tennessee at Martin and a Juris Doctor from the University of Memphis. Prior to the Senate, he entered politics in 2012. He serves on the Senate Finance, Ways & Means, Judiciary, and State & Local Government Committees, acting as First Vice-Chair of the Senate Finance Committee and Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee, which reviews and approves Senate amendments to the state budget. Notable positions include conservative stances on taxes and promoting state economic success.
