Biography

John O'Brien is a Democratic representative for Windsor-Orange-1 in the Vermont House of Representatives, serving since 2019 after election in November 2018 and re-elections in 2020 and 2022. Born in 1963, he grew up on a sheep farm in Tunbridge, Vermont, following in the footsteps of his father, Bob O'Brien, the first Democrat elected State Senator from Orange County since the Civil War in 1974. O'Brien is married to Emily Howe, with whom he runs Weddings at Landgoes Farm from May through October; they have two teenage sons. Notable achievements include producing and directing The Tunbridge Trilogy, independent films about small-town Vermont life, with Man with a Plan starring Fred Tuttle being the most famous; he once quipped at film festivals as "the only filmmaker in America who can shear a sheep and milk a cow." He serves on the Tunbridge Selectboard as Clerk, is a Justice of the Peace, a trustee for the Tunbridge Volunteer Fire Department, and a reading mentor at Tunbridge Central School.

  • Education: Graduated as valedictorian from Chelsea High School; earned a degree from Harvard College, majoring in government.
  • Political Experience: Member of the Vermont House of Representatives , Seat 39; serves on the House Committee on Agriculture, Food Resiliency, and Forestry, Vermont Milk Commission, Task Force to Revitalize the Vermont Dairy Industry, and Agricultural Fairs and Field Days Capital Program Advisory Committee.
