John T. McDonald III
John T. McDonald III is a Democratic member of the New York State Assembly, representing the 108th Assembly District since 2013. He holds the credential of Registered Pharmacist . His district encompasses parts of Albany, Rensselaer, and Saratoga counties, including the City of Cohoes , as well as Green Island, North Greenbush, East Greenbush, Rensselaer, Waterford, Troy, and Watervliet.
Before his election to the Assembly, McDonald served as Mayor of Cohoes for 13 years, establishing himself as a prominent local government figure in the Capital District.
Political Experience
McDonald has held several significant leadership positions within New York State government and local organizations:
- Chair of the Governmental Operations Committee in the New York State Assembly
- President of the New York State Conference of Mayors
- Chair of the Capital District Transportation Committee
- Board member and chair of various regional organizations, including RiverSpark, the Cohoes Industrial Development Agency, and the Cohoes Local Development Corporation
He serves on multiple Assembly committees, including Alcoholism & Drug Abuse, Health, Higher Education, and Ways and Means.

McDonald's legislative priorities center on local government, healthcare, and small business development. He has sponsored and passed legislation addressing unfunded mandates to local governments, property tax control, job growth and workforce development, healthcare access expansion, and the opioid crisis response.
