Biography
John Chilton McAuliff is a Democratic member of the Virginia House of Delegates representing District 30. Elected in 2025, he narrowly defeated incumbent Republican Geary Higgins, becoming the first Democratic state delegate to represent the area in over 30 years. A small business owner, he operates the Chilton House Bed and Breakfast in Warrenton, Virginia, a historic family home owned since the 1800s. His family has deep roots in Warrenton since the Revolutionary War, and he is a tenth-generation descendant of Mayflower passenger Mary Chilton. McAuliff campaigned against data centers, emphasized farmland preservation, and led in fundraising with over $3 million raised.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Grew up in Irvington, New York; graduated from The Masters School as senior class president; earned a bachelor's degree in Leadership Studies from the University of Richmond, where he worked with special needs students.
- Early Experience: Volunteered as an engineer in Peru; interned at USA Today, U.S. Representative Nita Lowey's office, and the White House Internship Program in 2013.
- Professional Roles: Served as chief of staff to Delegate David A. Reid for three years; worked at USDA Rural Development, helping 12,000 small businesses and farmers with renewable energy projects that created over 10,000 jobs; joined the White House Office of Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation in 2023, managing over $140 billion from the Inflation Reduction Act.
- Community Service: Member of Loudoun County's Medical Reserve Corps during COVID-19; chaired a local economic development group, raising funds for small businesses during lockdowns.
