Biography

John Hughes

John Hughes is a Republican State Representative serving South Dakota House District 13, which comprises a portion of southeastern Sioux Falls. He is an attorney and small business owner who has practiced law for 40 years in Sioux Falls.

Hughes was born and raised in Huron, South Dakota. He has lived in District 13 for more than 30 years and established his law practice in the district. He is married to Beth and has three grown sons, two daughters-in-law, three grandsons, and a granddaughter on the way. The family relocated to Sioux Falls in 1984.

Education

Hughes graduated from South Dakota State University and attended law school at the University of Nebraska College of Law in Lincoln. After completing his law degree, he practiced with an Omaha law firm for two years before relocating to South Dakota.

Political Experience

During his first term in office, Hughes served as Prime Sponsor for seven successful bills and Co-Sponsor of numerous others. Notable legislative work includes:

  • Prime Sponsor of HB1061, ensuring parents have the right to access their children's medical records
  • Prime Sponsor of HB1053, requiring a 60% vote instead of a simple majority to amend the state constitution
  • Co-Sponsor of HB1052, prohibiting eminent domain for CO2 pipelines
  • Co-Sponsor of HB1044, facilitating voluntary surrender of newborns

Hughes serves on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Taxation Committee, where he holds the position of Vice Chair.
