Biography
John Hoffman is a Democratic-Farmer-Labor member of the Minnesota Senate, representing District 34, which includes all or portions of Champlin, Brooklyn Park, Coon Rapids, Dayton, and Rogers in Anoka, Hennepin, and Wright counties. First elected in 2012, he is currently serving his fourth term after previously representing District 36 from 2013-2022. A longtime advocate for disability services, children, and families, he chairs the Human Services Committee and serves on committees including Energy, Utilities, Environment, and Climate; Environment, Climate, and Legacy; and Health and Human Services. He resides in Champlin with his wife and daughter.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Attended Winsted Holy Trinity High School; earned a B.A. from St. Mary's University; also studied at Mankato State University and University of Idaho.
- Early Career: Worked with children and families in public, private, and nonprofit sectors, including as a supervisor with the Iowa Department of Human Services providing services to adjudicated youth, and at PACER Center, a leading parent training center. Served on the Northwest Hennepin Human Services Advisory Council, Minnesota’s State Interagency Coordinating Council, Federal Interagency Coordinating Council, and as a board member/chair for groups like the Midway Chamber of Commerce.
- Political Experience: Elected to the Anoka Hennepin School Board in 2005, serving as Vice-Chair; elected to Minnesota Senate in 2012. Special legislative concerns include education, health and human services, environment, energy, and commerce.
