Biography
John Fitzpatrick is a Republican member of the Montana House of Representatives, representing District 76. Born and raised in Anaconda, Montana, he is a graduate of Anaconda High School and has deep roots in the community as a Deer Lodge County business owner. His career includes roles as former State of Montana Deputy Budget Director, senior management in mining, telecommunications, and utility industries, and forty years of advocacy before the Montana Legislature. He previously represented District 77 after winning a tight race against incumbent Sara Novak in 2022, and has served District 76 since 2023, assuming office on January 6, 2025, with his current term ending January 4, 2027. Notable achievements include being ranked the 5th most effective legislator in Montana, designated a “Champion of Business” by the Montana Chamber of Commerce, securing funding to double the capacity of the START Correctional Program , and maintaining a 100% voting record in support of Montana veterans in the 2023 and 2025 sessions. He serves on key committees such as Appropriations, House Committee on Long Range Planning , and Interim Budget Committee, focusing on economic development, education reform, rural schools, and preserving Montana’s natural resources.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a BA in sociology from the University of Montana; MA and PhD in governmental affairs and business development from Ohio State University.
- Political Experience: Elected to Montana House for District 77 in 2022; switched to District 76 in 2023 and re-elected in 2024 ; served on Appropriations Committee in 2023 alongside his son Steve Fitzpatrick; active in budget and fiscal policy leadership.
