Senator John Cherry

John D. Cherry III was born on May 30, 1985, in Clio, Michigan. A fifth-generation union member, Cherry has demonstrated a strong commitment to public service and advocacy for working families throughout his career. He resides in Flint with his wife Teresa Villacorta and their two children, Diana and a son.
Before entering the state legislature, Cherry worked for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources as a Performance Management Coordinator and in grants management. He and his wife also started a small business together, the Flint Coffee Company. Additionally, he served as vice chair of the Flint Charter Commission, where he played a pivotal role in proposing Flint's first new charter in over 40 years.
Cherry represents the 27th Senate District, which encompasses seven townships: Clayton, Flint Charter, Flushing Charter, Gaines, Grand Blanc Charter, Mt. Morris Charter, and Mundy Charter Townships.
Education
Cherry earned a bachelor's degree in environmental studies from the University of Michigan and a master's degree in public policy from the Ford School at the University of Michigan .
Political Experience
Cherry served two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives before advancing to the state senate. As a state representative, he was recognized as a leader in manufactured housing regulation reform, conservation strengthening, and worker protections.
In his current role in the state senate, Cherry serves as Chair of the Senate Labor Committee and is an effective member of the Appropriations Committee. He was elected Assistant President Pro Tempore in 2025. His legislative priorities include lowering costs for working families, safeguarding Michigan's natural resources, and strengthening infrastructure. He has also been a dedicated advocate for township governments and municipal revenue sharing. In recognition of his efforts, the Michigan Townships Association named him "Legislator of the Year" for his support of township government.
