Biography
Senator John Carson
Senator John Carson is a Republican representing Senate District 30 in Colorado, which includes Highlands Ranch, Roxborough, Sterling Ranch, Lone Tree, Castle Pines, Meridian, and parts of Littleton and Parker.
John Carson has been a long-time Colorado resident and has dedicated his career to public service. He and his family have lived in Highlands Ranch since 2002. His work has focused on making life more affordable for Colorado families through tax reduction, government efficiency, and responsible energy development. He is also an advocate for affordable healthcare and supports law enforcement initiatives.
Education
Carson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Colorado Boulder while serving in the United States Marine Corps Reserve from 1979 to 1985. He later obtained a Juris Doctor ** from the University of Colorado Boulder and completed a **Master of Laws in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center in 1996. He has been a licensed Colorado attorney for 38 years.
Political Experience
Carson began his involvement in politics as an undergraduate, interning for the Senate Steering Committee, where he gained insight into how the U.S. Senate operates. He subsequently worked on Capitol Hill for over 11 years as legal counsel for numerous congressmen and senators, including Colorado's U.S. Senator Wayne Allard, with whom he worked for more than 8 years.
From 2001 to 2009, Carson served as the Rocky Mountain Regional Director of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development under the George W. Bush administration. He later returned to Colorado to serve as President of the Douglas County Board of Education from 2009 to 2013, where he championed education innovation programs. The Denver Post recognized him as a "Top Education Thinker of 2012" for his work with the state's third-largest school district. In 2014, Carson was elected to the University of Colorado System's Board of Regents. He currently serves on the Senate Committee on Judiciary and the Senate Committee on Legal Services.
