Joseph Allen Tate was born on December 13, 1980, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. These influences shaped his commitment to community engagement and service.
Before entering politics, Tate had a diverse career path. As a teenager, he earned a scholarship to play football at Michigan State University. He subsequently played professional football in the National Football League for two seasons from 2004 to 2006. After his NFL career, Tate transitioned to military service, becoming a U.S. Marine Corps infantry officer from 2009 to 2013, where he deployed twice to Afghanistan as a platoon commander and company executive officer during Operation Enduring Freedom. Following his honorable discharge, he worked as a Program Manager for the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, helping small businesses expand their capacity.

Tate was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2018, representing what was then the 2nd District. He was re-elected in 2020 and now represents the 9th House District, which covers Detroit's Downtown, Belle Isle, and Eastside communities, serving approximately 91,712 constituents.
His most significant achievement is becoming Michigan's first and only Black Speaker of the House, a position he held from 2023 to 2025. He is currently serving his fourth term in the House.
