Biography
Senator Joe Picozzi
Joe Picozzi is a Republican state senator representing Pennsylvania's 5th Senate District, which covers Northeast Philadelphia. Born and raised in Somerton, he currently resides in Tacony. He is the son of a Philadelphia firefighter and a special education teacher.
At age 29, Picozzi made history as the youngest state senator in Pennsylvania and the first Republican elected to represent Philadelphia in the State Senate since 1996, defeating incumbent Democrat Jimmy Dillon. Among his legislative priorities are strengthening public safety, enhancing neighborhood quality of life, and improving education.
Education
Picozzi graduated from Georgetown University in 2017, where he was recognized as a George F. Baker Scholar. He attended Holy Ghost Preparatory School, where he founded the Politics Club. He is an Eagle Scout.
Political Experience
Before his election to the state senate, Picozzi served as chief of staff at the Manhattan Institute and worked as an aide to future Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy. He was also appointed to the Philadelphia Youth Commission by City Councilman Brian O'Neill.
In the state senate, Picozzi currently serves on seven committees, including as Chair of Urban Affairs & Housing and Vice Chair of Law & Justice. He co-chairs the Pennsylvania chapter of Future Caucus, a cross-partisan organization dedicated to lawmaking among Generation Z and millennial legislators. He was recognized as a 2017 finalist for Red Alert Politics' "30 under 30" list and is known for his focus on bipartisan solutions and next-generation leadership.
