Joe Miller

Joseph Adam Miller III was born on June 28, 1969, in Amherst, Ohio. He is a member of the Democratic Party and currently serves as the State Representative for Ohio House District 53, which encompasses parts of northern Lorain County including Amherst, Avon Lake, Lorain, Sheffield, and Sheffield Lake.

Miller is married to Kelly and has two children. Before his election to the state legislature, he served as a City Council Member for Amherst, Ohio. He is term-limited in the Ohio House and is currently a candidate for Ohio's 13th State Senate District in the 2026 election.

Education and Professional Background

Miller earned his Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from Bowling Green State University and later completed two graduate degrees from Ashland University: a Master of Education and a Master of Arts in American History and Government.

Professionally, he has worked as a Government and Social Studies Teacher at Firelands High School and as an Adjunct Instructor at Lorain County Community College.

Political Experience and Positions

Miller was first elected to the Ohio House in 2018, defeating Republican candidate Rob Weber with 63 percent of the vote. He has been reelected three times and is currently serving his fourth term in the 136th Ohio General Assembly.

As a legislator, his top priorities include advocating for quality education, job creation, green energy expansion, and veterans' support. He has been a vocal leader in addressing the opioid crisis and has championed women's rights and reproductive care. Additionally, he has pushed for revitalized local economy initiatives and reinstatement of local control in Lorain City schools.

Miller serves on multiple legislative committees including Workforce and Higher Education, Education, and Public Pensions and Insurance. He is the ranking member on the Agriculture Committee.
