Joe John

Joseph Robert John Sr. was born on October 13, 1939, in East Chicago, Indiana. He passed away on January 22, 2025, at the age of 85. John was a Democrat who represented North Carolina House District 40, which encompassed northwestern Wake County.

Political Experience

John had an extensive career in public service spanning multiple roles:

• North Carolina House of Representatives: Elected in 2016, John served five consecutive terms representing District 40 until his resignation in January 2025. He defeated incumbent Marilyn Avila in 2016 and again in a 2018 rematch, and won re-election in 2020 against Republican challenger Gerald Falzon.

• Judicial Service: Before his legislative career, John served as a judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals from 1992 to 2000. He also held positions as a state superior court judge and state district court judge based in Greensboro.
