Joe John
Joseph Robert John Sr. was born on October 13, 1939, in East Chicago, Indiana. He passed away on January 22, 2025, at the age of 85. John was a Democrat who represented North Carolina House District 40, which encompassed northwestern Wake County.
Political Experience
John had an extensive career in public service spanning multiple roles:
North Carolina House of Representatives: Elected in 2016, John served five consecutive terms representing District 40 until his resignation in January 2025. He defeated incumbent Marilyn Avila in 2016 and again in a 2018 rematch, and won re-election in 2020 against Republican challenger Gerald Falzon.
Judicial Service: Before his legislative career, John served as a judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals from 1992 to 2000. He also held positions as a state superior court judge and state district court judge based in Greensboro.
Legal Practice: John worked as a prosecutor and practiced law at the firm Pell, Pell, Weston & John.
Final Years
In January 2025, John announced his resignation from the North Carolina General Assembly after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis. He stated he had exhausted all treatment options and wished to spend his remaining time with family. He passed away shortly after his resignation announcement.
