Biography
Dr. Joaquin Arambula is a California Assemblymember representing the 31st Assembly District in Fresno County. Elected in 2016, he is the first Latino physician elected to the California State Assembly.
He grew up in Fresno after being born in Delano, in the heart of the farmworker movement. His medical background includes serving as an emergency room doctor in Selma, where his work helped shape his commitment to expanding access to health care—especially for vulnerable communities.

Political Experience
- California State Assembly : 2016–present
- Served as Chair of Assembly Budget Subcommittee No. 1 on Health and Human Services from 2016 to June 2023, with an emphasis on improving health care access and affordability and protecting safety-net programs.
- Worked with advocates and community partners on initiatives including expanding Medi-Cal access for income-eligible adults regardless of immigration status.
- During the COVID-19 pandemic, partnered with community organizations to support free vaccinations and food distributions to rural and underserved areas.
