Biography
Joanne Marie Rodríguez Veve is an Independent senator representing At-Large in the Puerto Rico Senate. Born on February 3, 1983, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, she initially entered politics in 2020 as the first senator elected under the Proyecto Dignidad , a socially conservative, pro-life party. She resigned from the party to serve as an independent, citing principled disagreements over issues like abortion and party compliance with its norms, including opposition to her authored Senate Bill 297.
She advocates for the right to life from conception to natural death, against the death penalty, for freedom of conscience and religion, and for Puerto Rico's political self-determination.
Education
Rodríguez Veve earned a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and a Juris Doctor from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. She also holds a Master's degree in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of Salamanca in Spain, and pursued studies toward a Master's in Puerto Rican History from the Center for Advanced Studies of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
Political Experience
Her professional background includes work as a canon lawyer in ecclesiastical matrimonial nullity cases and in human resources, specializing in labor law. Elected in 2020, she serves on key Senate committees, including Asuntos Municipales, Reglas y Calendarios, and Relaciones Federales y Viabilización del Estado. Notable positions include authoring legislation on life dignity issues and her transition to independent status to uphold her principles.
