Joan Fitzgerald

Joan Fitzgerald is a Democratic representative serving in the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing the 46th Assembly District. Born and raised in Wisconsin on October 4, 1964, she is a mom with two grown children, Sam and Marie, both graduates of Fort Atkinson public schools. She has been married to her husband Jerry for 35 years.

Education and Career

Fitzgerald is a retired high school math teacher who taught algebra, geometry, and advanced placement calculus in Jefferson public schools for 33 years. Beyond classroom instruction, she mentored new teachers, chaired the Math Department, and coached the Academic Decathlon team. She also served as a member of the Jefferson Education Association in leadership roles, including President, Vice-President, and Treasurer, and participated on the Negotiations Team. Earlier in her career, she worked as a tax preparer for Bare's Fort Tax Service.

Political Experience

Fitzgerald transitioned to public service after her teaching career, serving as a Supervisor on the Jefferson County Board. Appointed in 2019, she was elected to the position in both 2020 and 2022, representing portions of the City of Fort Atkinson.

As a county legislator, Fitzgerald demonstrated notable achievements. As chair of the Broadband working group, she helped develop business partnerships that brought nearly $5 million in grant money to Jefferson County. She also collaborated with colleagues to upgrade communications systems in the Sheriff's Department and, as a member of the Executive Committee, oversaw the Board's Strategic Planning process.

Beyond her official roles, Fitzgerald has been actively involved in her community, serving as President of the Fort Atkinson Athletic Booster Club , on the Library Board, and as a supporter of the Moms Demand Action Whitewater Chapter.
