Biography
Senator Jimmy Harris - Louisiana District 4
James "Jimmy" Harris III is a Democratic State Senator representing Senate District 4 in Louisiana, which encompasses Orleans Parish. A native of New Orleans, Harris was elected to the state senate in 2019 and is eligible to serve through the end of the 2028-2032 term. He maintains a private law practice in addition to his legislative duties and is based in New Orleans.
Education
Harris graduated from St. Augustine High School in New Orleans. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Morehouse College of Atlanta and his Juris Doctorate from Southern University Law Center.
Political Experience
Harris has held progressively senior positions across federal, state, and municipal government:
- State Representative for House District 99
- Director of Special Projects for Congressman Cedric Richmond of Louisiana's 2nd Congressional District
- Legislative Advisor to State Representative Cedric Richmond for House District 101
- Director of State Relations for the City of New Orleans
As State Senator, Harris serves on several important committees including Finance, Judiciary A , Senate & Governmental Affairs, and the Legislative Audit Advisory Council. He serves as Chairman of the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus and is active in the Democratic Caucus, Orleans Delegation, and Latino Commission.
Civic Involvement
Harris is an active member of the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club and holds membership in Omega Phi Psi Fraternity Inc., the Association of St. Augustine Alumni, Morehouse College Alumni Association, Louisiana Bar Association, and the Louis A. Martinet Legal Society.
