Biography
Jimmy Gomez is a Democratic U.S. Representative for California's 34th Congressional District, which includes diverse Los Angeles neighborhoods such as Eagle Rock, Boyle Heights, Downtown Los Angeles, Koreatown, Chinatown, and others. Born on November 25, 1974, to Mexican immigrant parents, he grew up without health insurance and faced financial hardship from medical bills as a child. A son of working-class parents, Gomez is an educator, former union organizer, renters' advocate, and labor leader who previously served as legislative and political director for the United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health-Care Professionals and political representative for the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees . He lives in Eagle Rock with his wife Mary and son Hodge, and is a lifelong Los Angeles Dodgers fan.
Notable achievements include founding and chairing the Congressional Dads Caucus and Congressional Renters Caucus; serving as Deputy Whip for Policy of the Democratic Caucus, Deputy Whip for the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Assistant Whip of the Democratic Caucus, and Vice Chair of the Committee on Oversight and Reform; and membership in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus , Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus , Congressional Freethought Caucus, Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus, and Future Forum. He serves on the Ways and Means Committee and Racial Equity Initiative, House Trade Working Group, and is a founding member of the Medicare for All Caucus. In the California State Assembly , he chaired the Appropriations Committee and championed paid family leave, climate change action, public health, environmental justice, water conservation, education access, civic engagement, campaign finance disclosure, LGBTQ+ rights, and affordable housing.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Attended Riverside Community College; B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles ; M.A. in Public Policy from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.
- Political Experience: Elected to California State Assembly for the 51st District , serving as Chair of the Assembly Appropriations Committee. Won special election to U.S. House in June 2017, taking office on June 6, 2017, and reelected since. Key roles include advocating for Medicare for All, Inflation Reduction Act, infrastructure, child tax credit expansion, rental assistance, affordable housing, environmental equity, student loan debt cancellation, and women's rights.
