Biography
Senator Jim Carlson represents Minnesota Senate District 52, which includes Eagan, Burnsville, Mendota Heights, and Mendota in Dakota County. Born February 17, 1947, he was raised on a farm, is married to Gayle with two children, and resides in Eagan. A retired mechanical engineer, he was first elected in 2006 and is currently in his fifth term , after serving Districts 38 and 51 . Notable achievements include chairing the Elections Committee, serving on Judiciary and Public Safety, Transportation, and State and Local Government committees; he helped pass public safety laws like increased penalties for distracted driving, hands-free cellphone use, and child safety seat requirements, plus voting access expansions. He announced he will not seek reelection in 2026.
