Biography

Senator Jim Burgin

James Andrew "Jim" Burgin was born on May 20, 1956, in Knoxville, Tennessee. He currently resides in Angier, North Carolina, where he lives with his wife, Ann, and has three children and four grandchildren.

Burgin is an active member of his community, serving as an elder and church leader at Crossroads Baptist Church in Lillington and maintaining involvement with the Angier Kiwanis Club and local Chambers of Commerce. Throughout his career, he has held leadership roles with community colleges, hospitals, education associations, workforce development boards, and local government organizations. In 2016, he received North Carolina's prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine award.

Education

Burgin earned his bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

Political Experience

Burgin is a Republican member of the North Carolina State Senate, representing District 12, which includes Harnett, Lee, and part of Sampson counties. He has served in the State Senate since January 2019 and is currently in his fourth term through 2026, having been elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2020, 2022, and 2024.

Before his Senate service, Burgin served two terms as a Harnett County Commissioner, where he served as chairman of the board.

In the State Senate, Burgin holds several significant leadership positions, including Chair of the Senate Healthcare Committee and Chair of the Appropriations Committee on Health and Human Services. He also serves as Co-Chair of the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Health and Human Services. Additionally, he is Vice Chair of the Council of State Governments Health Committee and a member of the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Burgin serves on numerous other committees including Agriculture, Energy, and Environment; Finance; Pensions and Retirement and Aging; and State and Local Government, among others. Notably, he supports Medicaid expansion, distinguishing himself as one of only a few Republicans in the North Carolina General Assembly to hold this position.
