Biography
Senator Jessica Bateman ** represents Washington's **22nd Legislative District, which includes Olympia , Lacey, and Tumwater. A lifelong Pacific Northwest resident born in 1981, she grew up in a single-parent, working-class household, shaping her advocacy for struggling families, affordable housing, and vulnerable communities. Notable achievements include sponsoring the landmark "middle housing" legislation in 2023, chairing the Senate Housing Committee with national recognition for housing affordability reforms, eliminating copays for abortion care, expanding access to mifepristone and behavioral health services, and securing over $1.2 billion for housing and homelessness initiatives.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: First-generation college student with a master’s degree in public administration from The Evergreen State College, a bachelor’s in environmental studies, and an associate degree from Green River Community College. She worked in customer service and as a housekeeper to pay for school.
- Political Experience: Currently serves as a Washington State Senator . Previously a Washington House Representative for District 22 . Served on Olympia City Council , worked as a legislative assistant in the Washington House , community organizer, and community impact director for United Way of Thurston County. Currently a health care strategic advisor and WFSE member.
