Biography
Jerry Klein
Jerry J. Klein was born on November 21, 1951, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and currently resides in Fessenden, North Dakota. He is a member of the Republican Party and has represented District 14 in the North Dakota State Senate since 1997. District 14 encompasses seven counties in central North Dakota.
Before his long career in public service, Klein operated a grocery store for 35 years and is a retired grocer. He was recognized as North Dakota Grocer of the Year in 2005. Beyond his legislative work, Klein has been involved in his community through various civic organizations, including service with the Fessenden Volunteer Fire Department since 1978 and the Fessenden Rescue Squad since 1985. He is a member of the Catholic faith and St. Augustine Catholic Church in Fessenden.
Education
Klein earned a Bachelor of Science in General Studies from the University of Mary in 1973 and attended Bismarck State College.
Political Experience
In the North Dakota State Senate, Klein has held several significant leadership positions. He currently serves as Assistant Majority Leader, a position he has held since 2013. Previously, he served as President Pro Tempore from 2009 to 2011 and has chaired the Republican Senate Caucus since 2000.
Klein serves on numerous committees and legislative bodies, including the Agriculture Committee, Industry Business and Labor Committee, Budget Section, Rules Committee, and Committee on Committees. He chairs the Delayed Bills Committee. Additionally, Klein is President of the Central Dakota Development Committee and Fessenden Economic Development. In terms of voting record, he has supported pro-education and public service policies 75% of the time, including votes to protect tenure and due process rights.
