Biography

Senator Jeremy Zellner

Jeremy J. Zellner is a Democratic politician representing New York's 61st State Senate District, a position he has held since winning a special election in February 2026. His district encompasses parts of Buffalo, Tonawanda, Amherst, and Grand Island, as well as the villages of Kenmore and Williamsville.

Born and raised in Tonawanda, Zellner grew up as the son and grandson of autoworkers. He was raised in a single-parent household where union benefits through the United Auto Workers provided health care and other necessities. These formative experiences shaped his commitment to working families and organized labor.

Education

Zellner earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Buffalo State College.

Political Experience

Zellner's political career began in 2003 when he joined the Erie County Democratic Party as a volunteer. He rapidly advanced through party ranks, serving as Democratic chief of staff at the Erie County Legislature, ECDC Executive Director, and becoming Chair of the Erie County Democratic Committee in 2012, a position he continues to hold.

His notable achievements and positions include:

  • 2016: Served on the Hillary for America National Finance Committee and was a statewide delegate at the 2016 Democratic National Convention
  • 2017-2026: Served as commissioner of the Erie County Board of Elections, resigning in January 2026 to contest the special election
  • 2024: Served as a delegate representing New York's 26th congressional district at the 2024 Democratic National Convention
  • Current: Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Procurement and Contracts and member of seven additional standing committees

As party chairman, Zellner has focused on implementing innovative voter outreach strategies and returning the party to its progressive roots. Under his leadership, the Erie County Democratic Party has achieved significant electoral victories, including reelecting County Executive Mark Poloncarz to a fourth term and electing Democratic representatives to Congress and state office.
