Biography

Senator Jeremy Moss

Political Party: Democratic
District: Michigan Senate District 7
Current Position: President Pro Tempore of the Michigan Senate

Jeremy Moss is a lifelong Oakland County resident who was born on June 23, 1986, in Detroit. He is Michigan's first openly gay Senator and has built a career centered on government transparency, local community support, and institutional reform.

Moss began his public service as the youngest-ever elected member of the Southfield City Council in 2011, a position he used to foster economic and neighborhood growth. He subsequently served in the Michigan House of Representatives as the Democratic Caucus Whip and then advanced to the Michigan Senate, where he became Assistant Democratic Leader during his first term.

In his current role as President Pro Tempore, Moss has championed significant legislation including restoring labor rights, implementing the first gun safety laws in a generation, protecting reproductive rights, and developing environmental protection measures for cleaner air and water. He led the successful campaign in 2022 that flipped the Michigan Senate to a Democratic majority for the first time in 40 years. In 2023, he sponsored the most bills signed into law of all state legislators.

His legislative accomplishments include reducing employment barriers for individuals with criminal records, lowering property taxes for home improvements, facilitating public-private partnerships for infrastructure repair, and creating educational pathways for high school dropouts.

Education and Political Experience

Moss earned dual bachelor's degrees in Journalism and Political Science from Michigan State University in 2008. During his university years, he participated in multiple student-led humanitarian aid missions, including disaster recovery work in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, home-building projects in South America, and HIV/AIDS relief efforts in South Africa. He completed the Michigan Political Leadership Program as part of the Class of 2013.

His early career included roles as a legislative aide to then-Representative Paul Condino, a campaign aide to Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence, and a district director to Representative Rudy Hobbs. He has also worked as a freelance graphic designer. Moss was first elected to the Michigan Legislature in 2015 and is currently serving his second term in the Michigan Senate.
