Biography
Jennifer Stewart
Jennifer Stewart is a Democratic member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, representing District 59 in Pawtucket. She was elected in November 2022, her first run for elected office.
District 59 includes the Oak Hill and Woodlawn neighborhoods in Pawtucket along the Providence border.
Political Experience
Representative Stewart serves on three House committees:
- House Health and Human Services Committee
- House Innovation and Technology Committee
- House State Government and Elections Committee
Her legislative work has focused on housing, tenant protections, public transit, and civil liberties. Notable efforts include:
- Introducing bills to extend notification periods for rent increases under the state's Residential Landlord and Tenant Act
- Cosponsoring legislation that added $5 million in funding to address the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority's budget gap
- Supporting the Equality in Abortion Coverage Act to expand insurance coverage for abortion care to Medicaid recipients and state employees
- Advocating for bills addressing Rhode Island's housing shortage and eliminating rental application fees
- Sponsoring resolutions requiring state agencies to report on artificial intelligence use and welcoming the Golden Rule educational vessel to Rhode Island
The Rhode Island American Civil Liberties Union recognized her voting record by awarding her a perfect score on its 2023 Legislative Score Card.
Education
Representative Stewart is a graduate of the University of Chicago with a master's degree in political science. She works as a history teacher.
