Biography
Senator Jen Plumb is a Democratic member of the Utah State Senate representing District 9, which includes areas such as downtown Salt Lake City, Central City, 9th & 9th, parts of Poplar Grove and Glendale, Ballpark, Liberty Wells, Yalecrest, Bonneville, Foothill, parts of the Avenues, University of Utah, and Emigration Canyon. Elected on November 8, 2022, she began her legislative service on January 1, 2023, and serves as the Senate Assistant Minority Whip. A Utah native born in Salt Lake City, she is a pediatric emergency medicine physician and professor in the University of Utah’s Department of Pediatrics at Primary Children’s Hospital. She co-founded Utah Naloxone to combat the opioid crisis by distributing naloxone for overdose reversal and has advocated for legislation reducing overdose deaths and infectious disease transmission in Utah and other states. Notable achievements include receiving the University of Utah School of Medicine’s 2019 Distinguished Humanitarian Award and sponsoring bills on substance use prevention, child welfare, criminal justice reform, and environmental quality.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Undergraduate degree from UCLA; Master of Public Health and MD from the University of Utah; Pediatrics residency at Riley Children’s Hospital/Indiana University; Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship at Primary Children’s Hospital.
- Political Experience: First term in the Utah State Senate as Assistant Minority Whip; serves on Senate Health and Human Services Committee, Senate Government Operations and Political Subdivisions Committee, Executive Appropriations Committee, Interim Revenue and Taxation Committee, and Social Services Appropriations Committee. Additional roles include Legislative Energy Working Group, Children’s Justice Center Advisory Board, Judicial Conduct Commission, Native American Legislative Liaison Committee, Victims Services Commission, Executive Team of the Utah Opioid Task Force, FDA Pediatric Advisory Committee, American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Substance Use and Prevention, and NCSL Overdose Prevention Fellow.
