Biography
Jehan A. Gordon-Booth is a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives, representing the 92nd District since 2009. Born in 1981 in Peoria, Illinois, she is the first African-American woman elected to represent central Illinois in the General Assembly and a full-time legislator, community activist, and mother residing in Peoria with her husband, Derrick, and daughter, Jianna. Notable achievements include serving as Assistant Majority Leader , Deputy Majority Leader , and Speaker Pro Tempore ; passing the comprehensive criminal justice reform bill SB 2872 in 2017; negotiating Illinois' first Historic Tax Credit to create jobs and revitalize Peoria; and advancing education reforms to improve funding and access for students statewide. She has held key committee roles, such as Appropriations-Human Services, Restorative Justice, and Redistricting, and was appointed to Gov. J.B. Pritzker's 2018 Restorative Justice transition committee.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Limestone High School; attended Parkland College; B.A. from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; completed Peoria Chamber of Commerce Political Leadership School.
- Early Career: Staff member at Illinois Central College and Bradley University's Small Business Development Center; coordinator of retention programs at Illinois Central University; served on Pleasant Hill School District 69 board as one of its youngest members; involved with Friends of People with AIDS, Junior Achievement, and Peoria Promise ; 2013 Edgar Fellow.
- Political Experience: Elected in 2008 to replace Aaron Schock; re-elected through 2024; former vice chair of committees including Child Care Accessibility, Transportation: Regulation, Roads and Bridges; developer of Emerging Leaders Program.
