Senator Jeff Zell

Jeff Zell is a Republican state senator representing District 36 in South Carolina, which encompasses Calhoun, Clarendon, Orangeburg, and Sumter Counties. Born on March 18, 1980, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, Zell's early life was marked by significant hardship, including poverty, foster care, and involvement in the juvenile justice system. He experienced periods without running water, electricity, or food while living through Ohio winters. Despite these challenges, Zell overcame these obstacles through military service and mentorship support, ultimately building a successful life dedicated to community service.

Zell is married to Christina, a nurse at a local hospital, and they have one daughter, Eva. He is currently based in Sumter, with his office located at 610 Gressette Building in Columbia.

Education

Zell holds a bachelor's degree in political science and an associate degree in Munitions Systems Technology. His education is complemented by extensive military training and experience.

Zell served with distinction in the United States Air Force for an extended period. In his community and school leadership roles, he has demonstrated significant impact:

• Serves as a Board Trustee for the Sumter School District and chairs the Ad Hoc Committee on Transportation
• Led efforts that resulted in the most significant pay raise for bus drivers in Sumter Schools' history
• Achieved a 40% reduction in student misconduct within one year of his initiatives
• Previously served as a member of the Sumter Schools Board
• Held the position of 2nd Vice Commander at Sumter American Legion Post 15
• Served as Committee Chairman of Americanism at American Legion Post 15

Additionally, Zell is actively involved in mentoring at-risk youth through Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and serves as a school board liaison for Carolina's Academic Leadership Network.
