Biography
Jeff Currey
Jeff Currey is a lifelong resident of East Hartford, Connecticut, with family roots in County Limerick, Ireland. He is a proud son, brother, and uncle who has been deeply involved in his community through public service. Currey is openly gay and has been a notable figure in LGBTQ+ advocacy within Connecticut politics.
Political Experience
Currey began his political career in 2009 when he was elected to the East Hartford Board of Education, later serving as its Chairperson. In 2014, he ran to succeed Tim Larson in the state legislature, winning unopposed in the Democratic primary and capturing 66% of the general election vote.
As a Democrat, Currey represented Connecticut's 11th Assembly District, which encompasses parts of East Hartford and Manchester, from 2015 to 2025. He was reelected unopposed in 2016 and 2018. During his ten years in the legislature, he served as a Deputy Majority Leader and held leadership roles including House Chair of the Education Committee starting in 2023, while also serving on the Appropriations, Commerce, and Judiciary Committees.
In July 2024, Currey announced he would not seek a sixth term. At the start of the 2025 legislative session, he transitioned to a new role as Chief of Staff to the House Majority Leader Jason Rojas.
Notable Achievements
Currey's legislative accomplishments include significant work on education equity, LGBTQ+ rights, and social welfare:
- Co-chaired the country's first legislatively created 2-Generational Workforce and School Readiness/Success Advisory Council to address poverty cycles
- Led the passage of legislation banning conversion therapy and the gay and transgender panic defense
- Championed expansion of LGBTQ+ youth access to HIV prevention medication and created the LGBTQ Health and Human Services Network
- Co-sponsored legislation providing state benefits to LGBTQ+ veterans discharged under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"
- Established the country's strongest legislation ensuring fair treatment of transgender inmates in the Department of Corrections
- Updated state Military Department nondiscrimination laws to protect members based on sexual orientation and gender identity
Education
Currey holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Wagner College.
