Political Experience
Cason began his public service career as a member of the Bedford, Texas city council. In 2010, he unsuccessfully ran against state Representative Todd Smith in the Republican primary election.
He was elected to the Texas House of Representatives to represent District 92 in November 2020, assuming office on January 12, 2021. He succeeded Jonathan Stickland and served a single term until January 10, 2023, when he was succeeded by Salman Bhojani. During his tenure, Cason was assigned to the County Affairs Committee and the Criminal Jurisprudence Committee.
Cason was considered among the most conservative members of the chamber, though he chose not to join the House Freedom Caucus. As a freshman representative, he was one of two members to vote against Dade Phelan for speaker of the House, objecting to Phelan's plan to appoint Democrats to chair certain committees. His tendency to force recorded votes after voice votes reportedly alienated him from Republican leaders. During the 2020 redistricting cycle, his district, centered on Hurst-Euless-Bedford, was redrawn into a majority Democratic seat.
Key legislative actions during his term included:
* Proposing an amendment in April 2021 to lower the minimum age for permitless handgun carry from 21 to 18 years, which failed.
* Voting in favor of the Texas six-week abortion ban in May 2021.
Cason did not seek reelection in 2022.
