Biography

Jefferson S. Burton

Jefferson "Jeff" S. Burton is an American politician and retired Army Major General. He was born and raised in Payson, Utah, and currently resides in Spanish Fork, Utah with his wife.

Burton has dedicated his career to public service, combining extensive military experience with civilian leadership roles. Following his retirement from the Army, he was appointed by Utah Governor Herbert to lead day-to-day operations of the Utah Department of Health's COVID-19 response. He currently works as Senior Vice President of Community Development at Zions Bank.

Education

Burton attended Payson High School before enrolling at Brigham Young University, where he participated in the ROTC program. He left school to join the Army in 1984 and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from the State University of New York at Albany in 1986. He also holds master's degrees in additional fields of study.

Political Experience

Burton served in the United States Army from 1984 to 2019, with his final seven years as Adjutant General of the Utah National Guard. This role provided him extensive experience with the legislative process, budgets, and appropriations, as well as relationships in both legislative and executive branches.

He was elected to the Utah House of Representatives in 2020, representing the 64th district, and assumed office on January 1, 2021, replacing Mike McKell who moved to a Senate position. During the 2022 General Session, he served on the Executive Offices and Criminal Justice Appropriations Subcommittee, House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee, and the House Political Subdivisions Committee.
