Jasper “Jaz” Martus , Michigan House District 69

Jasper “Jaz” Martus is a Democratic State Representative serving Michigan's 69th House District, which includes Flushing , Flushing Township, Clayton Township, Clio, Flint Township, Mount Morris, Mount Morris Township, Swartz Creek, Montrose, and parts of Montrose Township and Vienna Township in Genesee County.

Born January 4, 2000, in Genesee County to David and Karianne Martus, whose family roots there span over a century, Martus is a lifelong resident of Flushing, Michigan. A Catholic and member of the Flushing Historical Society, he became one of Michigan's youngest state representatives when elected in November 2022 at age 22, sworn in January 2023, and now serving his second term. Notable achievements include championing the Office of Worker & Economic Transition for job support, Research and Development Tax Credit for economic competitiveness, record mental health funding in schools, expanded healthcare access in low-income areas, and improved job training. He serves as vice chairman of the Health and Human Services and Labor and Economic Opportunity committees, plus multiple Appropriations subcommittees.

Education and Political Experience

Martus graduated from Michigan State University’s James Madison College in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and a minor in World Religions . As a student, he founded Kennedy Democrats and was active in UMMA and JMC Madhouse.

His political experience began early: staffer for U.S. Congressman Dan Kildee, assisting with Social Security, Medicare, and veterans' care; legislative aide and communications advisor for Michigan House Democrats, handling constituent services, legislation drafting, and communications; and full-time communications advisor post-graduation. During his 2022 campaign, he knocked on doors across the district, walking over 1,005 miles.
