Biography
Jay Webber is a Republican member of the New Jersey General Assembly representing District 26. Born on February 29, 1972, in Teaneck, New Jersey, he grew up in Clifton and attended St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale. He resides in Morris Plains with his wife Johanna and their eight children. A labor attorney, he practices at Webber McGill LLC in Whippany and serves as a trustee of St. Virgil’s Parish, while volunteering as a youth basketball and baseball coach.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a bachelor's degree in international studies from Johns Hopkins University in 1994, where he was a Second Team Academic All-American and Phi Beta Kappa in baseball. Received his law degree from Harvard Law School in 2000, clerked for New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Peter Verniero .
- Political Experience: Elected to the New Jersey General Assembly in 2008, serving continuously since. Appropriations Officer since January 2018. Chairman of the New Jersey Republican State Committee , leading the party to its first statewide victory in 12 years. Republican Chair of the N.J. Legislative Apportionment Commission . Serves on Assembly Labor and State & Local Government Committees.
- Notable Achievements: Founder and host of New Jersey Reagan Day. Earned awards including Taxpayer Hero from Americans for Prosperity-NJ, Outstanding Legislator of the Year from NJ Society for Environmental Economic Development, Defender of the Family from NJ Family Policy Council, Guardian of Small Business, and Fairfield Police Faith & Honor. Authored bipartisan laws like measures to stop sexual predators in schools, property tax relief, work-from-home protections, and criminal justice reform. Named Aspen Institute Rodel Fellow in Public Leadership; recognized as a "solid conservative" by Human Events and one of NJ’s 50 Most Powerful Elected Officials by PolitickerNJ in 2015.
