Biography
Jay Leftwich
James Asbury Leftwich Jr. was born on December 11, 1962, in Portsmouth, Virginia. He is a Republican member of the Virginia House of Delegates representing the 90th District, which encompasses part of the City of Chesapeake. He has served in the House of Delegates since 2014.
Leftwich is a practicing attorney and partner at Basnight, Kinser, Leftwich & Nuckolls, P.C., where he has been for 29 years. He is a member of the Virginia State Bar and admitted to practice in all Virginia courts, the United States District Court for the 4th Circuit, and U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
He is married to Renee D. and has five children: Logan, Austin, Faith, Hope, and Trey. He is a member of Great Bridge Presbyterian Church and has been active in various community organizations throughout his career.
Education
Leftwich earned a Bachelor of Science from James Madison University in 1985 and a Juris Doctor from T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond in 1988. He was also a Fellow of the Sorensen Institute of Political Leadership at the University of Virginia.
Political Experience
Leftwich served on the Chesapeake School Board from 2002 to 2013, serving as chairman from 2012 to 2013. He was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2013 and has held several prominent committee positions.
Currently, he serves on the Courts of Justice Committee, General Laws Committee, and Privileges and Elections Committee. He was promoted to chair of the General Laws Committee in 2022. He has also chaired various subcommittees within the House.
Leftwich has received multiple awards and recognition, including the Multiple Sclerosis Leadership Award and was named to the Top 40 Under 40 Professionals in Hampton Roads in 2000. He was also awarded the Virginia Chamber of Commerce Champion of Freedom Award. Additionally, he served as president of the Chesapeake Bar Association in 1999, during which the organization established a charitable foundation and launched community programs including a high school docent/mentoring program.
