Biography
Javier Loera Cervantes is a Democratic Illinois State Senator representing the 1st District, which includes parts of Chicago's Southside, including Pilsen and Berwyn. A lifelong Chicago resident born in the city, he was appointed to the Senate in fall 2022 following the resignation of Tony Munoz and re-elected in 2024. He champions legislation on health care access, workers' rights, immigrant support, criminal law reform, and environmental issues, motivated by his experiences and his daughter Madison, a visual artist and advocate. Notable achievements include leading contract campaigns at SEIU for wage increases, health insurance, and retirement benefits, and sponsoring laws like one effective January 1, 2025, changing "unlawful" terminology and enabling dental assistants to perform trained duties. He currently chairs the Criminal Law Committee and serves on Senate Energy & Public Utilities, Labor, Licensed Activities, Pensions, and Appropriations-Education Committees.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Studied visual communications at the International Academy of Design and Technology and labor studies at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Labor.
- Professional Experience: Worked 12 years as a union representative at SEIU Health Care Illinois and Indiana, advancing to nursing home division coordinator; passionate about community organizing and creative arts.
