Jason Wynne Hughes

Jason Wynne Hughes is an American politician and native of New Orleans, Louisiana. He is a member of the Democratic Party and has built a career focused on public service, education reform, and community development. Hughes is known for his principled leadership, coalition building, and commitment to his constituents' needs.

Education

Hughes graduated from McDonogh #35 Senior High School in New Orleans. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, with honors, from the Nelson Mandela School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs at Southern University and A&M College. During his time at Southern University, he was an active member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.

Political Experience

Hughes began his public service career in senior positions working for prominent Louisiana leaders:

• Assistant Legislative Director to Louisiana Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco
• Regional Manager for U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu
• Director of Federal Relations for the City of New Orleans
• Senior advisor and cabinet member to two higher education system presidents

In 2019, Hughes was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives representing District 100 in Orleans Parish, a position he has held since January 2020. In the state legislature, he serves on multiple committees including Appropriations, Health and Welfare, and Judiciary. He has earned recognition for securing resources for economic development, improving public safety, supporting survivors of violence, and strengthening public schools.

More recently, Hughes expanded his role in public service and currently serves as Co-Chair of the Louisiana Future Caucus. He is also active in his community as a member of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church and maintains memberships in various alumni associations and professional organizations.
