Biography
Jason Cord Buckel is a Republican politician and attorney representing District 1B in the Maryland House of Delegates since 2015. He has served as Minority Leader since April 2021, following his role as Chief Deputy Minority Whip from 2017 to 2021. Notable achievements include chairing the Task Force on the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority and co-chairing the Task Force on the Economic Future of Western Maryland . He serves on the Ways and Means Committee and Rules and Executive Nominations Committee, and has been involved in commissions like the Maryland Redistricting Reform Commission and Tri-County Council for Western Maryland .
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Attended Bishop Walsh High School ; B.A. in political science from George Mason University; J.D. from University of Maryland School of Law. Admitted to the Maryland Bar in 1996; managing partner at Buckel, Levasseur & Pillai, LLC, focusing on personal injury, wrongful death, and business litigation.
- Political Experience: Born and raised in Allegany County; joined Maryland Republican Party in 2006 and served on Allegany County Republican Central Committee . Elected in 2014, defeating four-term incumbent Kevin Kelly; sworn in January 2015. House chair of Allegany County Delegation since 2016.
