Biography
Jasmeet Kaur Bains represents California's 35th Assembly District, which encompasses much of Kern County, including Bakersfield. Elected in November 2022, she is the first Sikh American and first South Asian woman elected to the California State Legislature. A family physician specializing in family medicine and addiction care, Dr. Bains continues to practice in the community while serving as Chief Medical Officer for the Central Valley with the California Medical Assistance Team , responding to disasters like wildfires and COVID-19 surges. Notable achievements include securing over $20 million for public safety and fentanyl combat, a $100 million tax cut for nursing mothers, legislation against catalytic converter theft, establishing foundations for a medical school in Kern County, and streamlining addiction treatment via AB 2376 . She chairs the Assembly Aging and Long-Term Care Committee and serves on Business and Professions, Emergency Management, Revenue and Taxation, and Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committees; recent honors include 2024 Legislator of the Year from CalPACE and Public Safety Champion by the Kern Law Enforcement Association. Born July 2, 1986, in Ohio to Indian immigrant parents, she was raised in the Valley.

- Education: Bachelor's degree from Illinois Institute of Technology; M.D. from American University of Antigua; residency at Clinica Sierra Vista in Kern County.
- Political Experience: Elected to Assembly District 35 in 2022 ; first term with 26 bills initiated . Previously appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown in 2017 to chair the California Healthcare Workforce Policy Commission; volunteer with Global Family , San Joaquin Valley Air District’s Environmental Justice Advisory group, and Taft College Foundation.
