Janie Ward-Engelking

Janie Ward-Engelking was born in Caldwell, Idaho, and has been a 36-year resident of District 18. She comes from a strong educational background—both of her parents were teachers, and her husband was also a teacher. The family owned a dairy farm in Notus, Idaho. Ward-Engelking has been deeply involved in her community, serving on interview teams for school district leadership, participating in drug advisory committees, and working with the Boise Metro Chamber.
Education
Ward-Engelking earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Idaho State University and her Master of Arts from Boise State University. She attended Whittier College before pursuing her higher education in Idaho.
Political Experience
Legislative Career
Ward-Engelking served in the Idaho House of Representatives representing District 18 before advancing to the state Senate. She was appointed to the Idaho Senate on December 20, 2013, by Governor Butch Otter to complete an unexpired term. She has been re-elected multiple times, including securing 100% of the votes in the 2016 General Election. Currently, she serves as Minority Caucus Chair in the Idaho Senate.
Professional Background
Before her political career, Ward-Engelking worked as a classroom teacher for 33 years in the Boise and Caldwell school districts. She also served as a curriculum writer and trainer for the College of Western Idaho from 2009 to 2012, and has been an active facilitator and trainer for building community partnerships throughout the state.
Honors and Recognition
Among her notable achievements, Ward-Engelking received Idaho's 2020 Mother of Achievement Award and the IEA Friend of Education Award. She is recognized as a Boise Metro Chamber Lifetime Champion.
