Biography

Senator Janice Weiner

Janice Weiner is a Democratic state senator representing Iowa Senate District 45, which encompasses Iowa City and University Heights in Johnson County. Born in 1957 in Iowa City, she was raised in Coralville in a politically active household that instilled in her a commitment to public service.

Before entering electoral politics, Weiner had a distinguished career as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer spanning decades. She joined the State Department in 1987 and was initially posted in East Berlin, where she served both before and after the Berlin Wall fell. Her diplomatic career took her to Belgium, Turkey, Poland, Canada, Mexico, Germany, and Washington, D.C. After retiring from the Foreign Service, she worked for the American Foreign Service Association as a consultant and foreign affairs professional.

Weiner moved back to Iowa in 2015 with her younger daughter and is currently raising her granddaughter. She is deeply involved in community organizations, including serving as president of the board of Congregation Agudas Achim synagogue and holding leadership roles at various civic institutions. She is also a co-founder of the grassroots group Potluck Insurgency and plays in the Community Band.

Weiner is a graduate of Iowa City West High School, Princeton University , and Stanford Law School .

Political Experience

Weiner began her political career as an organizer for the Iowa Democratic Party in 1984, serving as the sole organizer in Johnson County at that time. She first ran for the Iowa Senate in 2018 for District 37 but lost the Democratic primary to Zach Wahls. She was elected to the Iowa City City Council in 2019 and served as an at-large member before running for the state senate again in 2022.

In 2022, Weiner won election to the Iowa Senate from District 45 following the retirement of long-serving Senator Joe Bolkcom. She currently serves on several senate committees, including Commerce, Judiciary, Local Government, and Rules & Administration . In November 2024, she was elected Iowa Senate Democratic Leader, replacing Senator Pam Jochum. She is known for delivering well-researched contributions during committee meetings and floor debates, often identifying substantive flaws in proposed legislation.
