Biography
Janet Trafton Mills, a Democrat, is the 75th Governor of Maine, serving statewide since January 2, 2019, as the first woman elected to the office. Born on December 30, 1947, in Farmington, Maine, she comes from a politically active family and has a long history of "firsts," including being the first woman elected District Attorney in New England and the first woman Attorney General of Maine. She was re-elected in 2022, earning more votes than any governor in Maine history and securing a majority in both terms—the first since 1970. Notable achievements include expanding Medicaid to over 100,000 people, fully funding schools for the first time, cutting taxes for retirees, and leading responses to the opioid crisis and COVID-19 pandemic.
