Biography

Janeese Lewis George is a Democratic member of the Council of the District of Columbia representing Ward 4, elected in 2020 as the first self-described democratic socialist on the Council since 1998. She serves as Chairperson of the Committee on Facilities and holds positions on several other committees, while running for mayor in the 2026 election.

Janeese Lewis George, born April 30, 1988, is a third-generation Washingtonian and Ward 4 native raised in a working-class family by a union postal worker. She resides in the Manor Park neighborhood with her husband Kyle, son Pierce, and dog Sully. An experienced attorney, civil servant, community activist, and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Washington Bar Association, she focuses on juvenile justice reform, public service, and community issues.

Education and Political Experience

  • Attended DC Public Schools: Cuno H. Rudolph Elementary, Alice Deal Middle School, and School Without Walls .
  • Earned a Bachelor of Arts in politics and government from St. John's University.
  • Received a Juris Doctor from Howard University School of Law, where she edited the Human Rights & Globalization Law Review and served on the Trial Advocacy Team; worked as a waitress to pay tuition.
  • Began legal career in 2014 with Philadelphia’s first African-American District Attorney.
  • Served as DC Assistant Attorney General in the Juvenile Section under Karl A. Racine, advancing juvenile justice reform, "I Belong Here" initiatives, and the Human Trafficking Taskforce.
  • Elected Ward 4 Councilmember in November 2020; term from January 2021 to present.
