Biography
Jana Brown is a Democratic representative for Vermont House District Chittenden-1, serving Richmond in Chittenden County since January 2021. Notable achievements include her leadership at the Children’s Literacy Foundation and advocacy for child welfare issues like food insecurity, childcare, and school equity.
Jana Brown grew up in Fair Haven, a rural town in Rutland County, Vermont. She is an attorney and nonprofit professional currently serving as Program Manager at the Children’s Literacy Foundation, providing literacy programs and books to economically disadvantaged children in Vermont and New Hampshire. Elected in November 2020, she assumed office on January 6, 2021, and focuses on issues affecting children and families. She serves as an elected trustee for the Richmond Free Library, Chair of the Richmond Democratic Caucus, and board member for Our Community Cares Camp, while volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House in Burlington.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University and The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. Completed Vermont Leadership Institute and Vermont Early Childhood Leadership Institute , both run by the Snelling Center for Government.
- Political Experience: Began career in the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, then worked 4.5 years in Vermont Attorney General’s Civil Litigation Division after returning in 2009. Elected to Vermont House in 2020 as Democrat for Chittenden-1; re-elected since.
