Biography
Jan Slaughter Jones is a Republican member of the Georgia House of Representatives, representing District 47 in northwest Fulton County and portions of eastern Cherokee County, including parts of Milton, Mountain Park, Alpharetta, Roswell, and unincorporated areas. She has served since 2003 and holds the position of Speaker Pro Tempore, the second-highest leadership role in the House, a post she has occupied since 2010—making her the first woman in that role and the highest-ranking woman in Georgia legislative history. From November 2022 to January 2023, she acted as Speaker following the death of David Ralston. Notable achievements include advocating for education reform, job creation, local government control, transparency, and blocking Medicaid expansion in 2014.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a B.A. from the University of Georgia and an M.B.A. in Finance from Georgia State University. Previously worked in marketing, finance, and as a small business owner.
- Political Experience: Elected to the Georgia House in 2002, taking office in 2003. Served briefly as House Republican Majority Whip in 2005-2006. Elected Speaker Pro Tempore in 2010 and re-elected, including in 2019. Granddaughter of farmers and daughter of a career soldier; resides in Fulton County with husband Kalin, four children, and four grandchildren.
