Biography
Jan Hochadel is a Democratic/Working Families Party member of the Connecticut State Senate representing District 13, which includes Meriden and parts of Cheshire, Middletown, and Middlefield. She assumed office on January 4, 2023, following her election in November 2022 after the resignation of Mary Daugherty Abrams. A mother of three and longtime Connecticut resident, she serves as Deputy Majority Leader, Senate Chair of the Aging Committee, and Vice Chair of the Environment Committee. She also sits on the Banking, Housing, Planning and Development, and Public Health Committees. Notable achievements include leading policies to improve seniors' quality of life, securing millions in education funding, and advocating for workers' rights as former president and current vice president of the American Federation of Teachers Connecticut , representing 30,000 members.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of New Haven; Master of Science in Education and Sixth Year Diploma from Sacred Heart University.
- Professional Experience: Began career as an engineer at Omega Engineering in Stamford and Pfizer in Wallingford and New York; later taught physics and science at Connecticut technical high schools, including Wright Technical High School in Stamford , and served as an 8th-grade Summer Enrichment Program instructor at Norwalk Community College.
- Union and Advocacy Roles: Elected president of AFT-CT in 2015; AFT Vice President in Washington, D.C. ; Co-Titular of the Americas for Public Service International; served on Connecticut AFL-CIO executive board as vice president; on Gov.-elect Ned Lamont's 2018 transition committee and Reopen Connecticut COVID-19 panel .
- Political Career: Elected to Connecticut State Senate District 13 in 2022, defeating Republican Joseph Vollano; term ends 2027.
