Biography
James Maroney is a Democratic state senator representing Connecticut's 14th District, which includes Milford, Orange, and parts of West Haven and Woodbridge. First elected to the Senate in 2018, he currently serves as Deputy Majority Leader and Co-Chair of the General Law Committee, with additional roles as Vice Chair of Energy & Technology and member of committees including Aging, Finance, Revenue & Bonding, and Higher Education & Employment Advancement. Notable achievements include passing comprehensive consumer data privacy laws, children's and consumer health data privacy laws, AI governance for state government, and pharmacy modernization; his tech legislation work earned national recognition and a spot on the Leadership Council of the Future of Privacy Forum Center for Artificial Intelligence. He also played a key role in extending outdoor dining during the pandemic.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Jonathan Law High School in Milford ; earned a B.A. in Economics from Yale University , where he was a three-time varsity letter winner in track and cross-country, team captain, and recipient of the Yale Men’s Cross-Country Award.
- Early Career: Worked as an equities trader at Bridgewater Associates and Heartland Securities ; founded First Choice College Placement, an educational consulting business in Milford .
- Community Involvement: Past president and founding member of Milford Education Foundation; served on Milford Board of Education; past president of Devon Rotary and scholarship committee chair.
- Political Experience: Connecticut House of Representatives, 119th District ; elected to Senate, 14th District .
